Mission

The Milestone Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide the best quality services to empower individuals with substance use and behavioral health disorders to attain stability, dignity, recovery, and an enhanced quality of life.

History

  • 1967
    Milestone is founded as a detoxification program with services focused on people with addiction to alcohol or other drugs who could not afford to pay the full cost of their care.

  • 1979
    The Residential Treatment Program is established in Old Orchard Beach to treat people with late-stage alcohol/drug addiction whose long history of substance use did not respond to short-term therapies.

  • 1998
    Milestone assumed sponsorship of an emergency shelter and detoxification program in Portland.

  • 2002
    Milestone opened a permanent housing program in Old Orchard Beach to assist graduates of the Residential Care Program to have sober housing and ongoing support.

  • 2010
    In collaboration with the City of Portland and Portland Downtown, and other community partners, Milestone launched the Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement (HOME) Team to provide needed services to individuals who are living on the streets of Portland and suffering with chronic mental health and substance use disorders.

  • 2016
    Milestone launched the Housing Navigator Program to move chronically homeless individuals into stable, permanent housing.
