Bob Fowler, LCSW, CCS
Bob was hired as Milestone’s Executive Director in April of 2014. He has over 25 years of experience in behavioral health treatment and administration. Bob earned his MSW degree from the University at Albany. He earned a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Administration with a concentration in Financial Management from the Muskie School at the University of Southern Maine, and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Vermont. Bob’s professional experience includes various clinical positions, directing a mobile crisis team, and leading a number of nonprofit behavioral health programs throughout the northeast. He served on the Treatment Task Force of the Maine Opiate Collaborative, and was appointed to the Maine legislature’s Task Force to Address the Opiate Crisis in the State. Bob believes that Milestone serves a critical need in the community by providing compassionate, competent care to individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction, and he feels honored to work with Milestone’s staff and clients.
Director of Finance & Administration
Marianne has worked as Milestone’s as Director of Finance and Administration since 2014. Marianne has 30 years of experience as a financial and human resources professional. She was previously Assistant Vice President of Finance and Administration at Synergent and owner of Guerin Associates, LLC and Guerin Oil, LLC. In 2005, she was recognized by the Small Business Administration as the state and national recipient of the Small Business Person of the Year award. She has also served as a member of the National Women’s Business Council in Washington, D.C. and was a member of the board of directors for the Children’s Dream Factory and the Jack McPhillips memorial fund. Marianne believes strongly that everyone deserves a chance at happiness regardless of the perils they my face throughout life.
Director of Development
Manuela oversees Milestone’s fundraising activities, which includes attracting and securing diversified funding sources to assure the organization continued sustainability. She joined Milestone in 2015 with over ten years of experience in the nonprofit sector and a proven track record of fund development, donor stewardship and community relations with several organizations, including as Development Manager for CASPAR, a nonprofit for homeless individuals affected by mental health and substance use disorders, and as the Director of Development for the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals. Manuela holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Southern Maine and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Louisiana State University. She is thrilled to be part of the outstanding Milestone team and to work for an organization that is so integral to the well-being of the community.
Lauren Wert, RN, BSN
Director of Nursing
Lauren came to Milestone in 2013 as a Registered Nurse working on the detox floor, and was soon promoted to Director of Nursing in 2014. In this role, Lauren supervises Milestone’s nursing staff, provides education about addiction within the community, oversees data collection for reporting and communications with the State of Maine, and ensures departmental efficiency. She collaborates with all other Milestone programs to maximize client services. Lauren holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Maine. She loves working with Milestone clients and staff, and finds her work in the detoxification clinic tremendously rewarding.
Dr. Mary Dowd, MD
Dr. Mary Dowd was a family doctor in Yarmouth, Maine, until she started working in primary care for prisoners at the Cumberland County Jail, where the majority of the inmates suffered from substance use disorders. Motivated to help others, Dr. Dowd left her family practice, and in 2008 became the Medical Director of the Detoxification Program at Milestone. Dr. Dowd also works for Catholic Charities in its substance use treatment program and at Discovery House in South Portland, a methadone clinic. Beyond treating clients who are going through withdrawal, Dr. Dowd believes in listening to people’s stories, and helping them connect with treatment and develop strategies to improve their lives. Dr. Dowd is also a published poet who has penned several op-eds for the Portland Press Herald.
Tom began working at Milestone in 2007 as a shelter attendant. He later became a shift leader, an assistant shelter manager, and in 2010 was appointed Shelter Manager. In this capacity, Tom manages the day to day operations of the shelter, supervises shelter staff, and oversees communications and reporting with state funding agencies. Tom also worked as a shelter attendant with the City of Portland and as an accountant for 16 years. He holds a degree in Business Administration from Husson College. He believes Milestone fills a much a needed community service, and he is committed to the organization’s staff and clients.
Director of Community Outreach
Joe joined Milestone in 2008 as a shelter attendant. Before being promoted to HOME Team Manager in 2012, he served in other roles within the organization, including counselor aid, shift supervisor, and assistant shelter manager. Currently, Joe’s responsibilities include supervising the HOME Team, as well as managing some of the shelter personnel. He also actively represents Milestone within the community by working with other key agencies, including the University of New England, Mercy Hospital, Portland Recovery Community Center, the City of Portland, Preble Street, and Oxford Street. Joe is committed to Milestone’s mission and the high-quality services it provides.
Cliff Thibodeau, LADC, CCS
Clinical Team Leader, Portland
Cliff has been with Milestone since 1999. Eight months after being hired as a shelter attendant, he became an RADC on the counseling team. He later went on to earn his LADC and became a counselor. In 2006, he was promoted to Clinical Team Leader at Milestone’s Portland facility. In this position, Cliff supervises Milestone’s Portland-based counseling staff, collaborates with other departments, and oversees communications and reports with the State of Maine. He conducts psycho-social client evaluations and group counseling, provides case management, and connects clients with after care services. He feels connected to the mission of the organization, and finds his work with the clients deeply motivating.
Sara Bachelder, LADC, CCS
Clinical Team Leader, Old Orchard Beach
Sara has extensive experience in the substance use field working with both youth and adults. She has been the Clinical Team Leader of Milestone’s Extended Care Program since 2014. In this role, she oversees all clinical programming, including therapeutic groups’ assignments and participation. She is also responsible for the program’s clinical supervision. Prior to coming to Milestone Sara worked at Day One for ten years. She was also a substance abuse treatment clinician at the York County jail and conducted therapeutic adventure programming with youth on probation from all over the state of Maine. In addition to her LADC and CCS, Sara holds a Bachelor in Biochemistry. She is committed to this field of work and to Milestone’s approach to treatment.
Jayme Villanueva, LADC
Jayme joined Milestone in 2014. As Operations Manager of the Extended Care Program, she oversees all the administrative functions of the Old Orchard Beach campus – from billing, to budgets, to helping clients access MaineCare, to daily programmatic operations – and she ensures smooth communication with Milestone’s Portland facilities. Jayme is also a substance abuse counselor and assists other clinicians with case management. Prior to coming to Milestone, Jayme was a mental health case worker for 10 years with Opportunity Alliance. She credits Milestone for placing clients on the road to recovery, and for providing effective treatment for clients who may not have had success in other programs. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Southern Maine.
